ESTRELLA DAMM INVITES US TO ENJOY THE SUMMER OF 2021 RECYCLING ALUMINIUM IN THE 29TH EDITION OF “CRUSH YOUR CAN”
One more summer…
ESTRELLA DAMM and DAMM LEMON invite us to recycle the beberage cans in the can crushers along the Mediterranean coast. A direct aluminium recycling service where cans go straight to the Metal Foundry. As always, you will find them on the Catalan and Balearic beaches from Llançà to Alcanar, and from Port D’andratx to Sa Colònia de Sant Jordi.
Barcelona.
In addition to the fixed can compactors that provide service throughout the year, we can now find many seasonal compactors, which will reinforce the recycling service on the beaches during the summer, and which will continue to be installed until Friday, May 14.

The aluminum is the third quimical element more abundant in the earth’s crust (After oxygen and silicon). It holds the title of most abundant metal, ahead of iron and magnesium, and it is also very abundant on the moon.
Mataró.
The aluminum cannot be found free by nature: it comes from (is extracted) from a reddish-brown mineral called bauxite. To process bauxite and obtain aluminum, large amounts of water and energy are needed (this energy, in particular, to make the electrolysis alumina, the intermediate material). From 4 Tons of bauxite, 2 Tons of alumina are obtained, and from these 2 Tons of alumina, 1 Ton of aluminum is finally obtained.
Bauxite Mine. Approximately 85% of the bauxite produced in the world becomes aluminum.
Bauxite was discovered in 1821 by Pierre Berthier, who extracted it for the first time in the village of Les Baux de Provenza (in Arlés, France).
This summer marks the 200th anniversary of the discovery of bauxite.
After iron, aluminum is the most used metal in the world. Due to its lightness, malleability and conductivity, aluminum is used to build airplanes, cars, high-speed trains, doors and windows, elements of transmissions and telecommunications, and containers of all kinds, especially beverage cans, because they cool very quickly.
The aluminum used in the making of any object, beverage cans included, can be reused infinitely.
And it is when we talk about recycled aluminum, that the story is quite another, in both senses, different and distinguished. Because the recycling of aluminum saves 95% of the cost of the energy necessary for the process of new aluminum, or in other words, the aluminum recycling process only needs 5% of the energy consumed in the production of virgin metal. And you can recycle it as many times as you want. For this reason, the aluminum can is the most recycled container in the world. Source: Arpal.

Aluminum cans are only about 0.25 millimeters thick and weigh 10 grams or less. The beverage cans are airtight, protect from air, light, bacteria, and cannot be opened (or tampered with) without it being obvious.
It is calculated that the 75% of all aluminum that has been manufactured in the last 100 years is still in use.

Compaction at source is decisive in the can recycling process because it reduces the volume by almost 80%.

Finally, we group them into comfortable bales that we deliver to the Foundry, ready to recycle and (in a few weeks) to be reintroduced as raw material into the European economy. And this is how, together, we close the virtuous circle of the circular economy.

CRUSH YOUR CAN 2021 has a double objective: to RECYCLE as many cans as possible, and to EDUCATE that metal is forever and that #everycancounts.

The Estrella Damm recycling network in the Mediterranean is just another little thing, a reinforcement during the hottest months, when cans cool us down and can be lost in the garbage more easily. The recycling points are strategically selected with the municipal technicians of each locality, looking for the areas with the highest consumption of cans, because, as we can see, it takes almost 100 people to recycle their beverage to get just 1 kilo!

Estrella Damm carries the Mediterranean Sea in its DNA. For this reason, the CRUSH YOUR CAN recycling campaign extends to the Balearic Islands and is currently working on new compactors and different extensions that include the arrival of compactors to the Valencian Community.
